GLOBAL ODYSSEY 2010: BLOG # 4 THE TSA AND THE PSA

After several blogs on packing, enough already! When Joel Y. came by, expecting to find us gone, we were still packing. Thanks for your good humor and assistance, Joel! We got out the door by … 9:11. A sign?

It’s the beginning of our trip and we have been paying lots of attention to the TSA. Do you know, for example, that only knives with blades less than four inches can be taken aboard a ship? That’s not to say that Sam is the kind of guy who would want to carry his “knife collection” (he doesn’t have one yet, and don’t give him any ideas …) on the cruise with him, but whoever heard of anyone holding an ocean liner hostage with his pocket knife? Indeed, last time, I looked, they provide knives gratis in the diningroom. Once aboard, we’ll check to make sure they haven’t replaced them with plastic. So the TSA is at work, checking, scanning, making rules, defending our borders. I’m relieved.

What we should have been worrying about, however, was the PSA. We’d both had physicals before our departure and returned at the end of last week for blood work, which could only be taken after fasting. On our way out of town, the phone rang and I was told by the doctor’s office that I had an elevated PSA. Unfortunately (or fortunately, depending on how you look at it), our pack-athon had thrown us behind schedule, so we were still in town, and able to go by the doctor’s office for a “PSA exam.” The resemble the TSA to the degree that both can involve intrusive body searches. The moral? (1) If you’re traveling, have your medical exam a bit before we did. (2) Think twice about answering the telephone on your way out the door! (3) There will always be something at the last minute you aren’t ready for – plan accordingly.

So … on to Ft. Lauderdale!
